LPGA Tour: Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie and Cristie Kerr won second-round matches to lead six Americans into the third round of the Sybase Match Play Championship in Gladstone, N.J.
The afternoon had some great drama, particularly Pleasanton native Creamer's match with Hall of Famer Karrie Webb, and Wie's 20-hole win over Anna Nordqvist. Creamer had a 1-up victory, making a downhill, 5-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th to put away Webb, a two-time winner this year.
Kerr, the reigning LPGA champ, was the most impressive player in the round that was played mostly in heavy rain and ended in brilliant sunshine, beating Belen Mozo 7 and 6 at Hamilton Farm.
Fellow Americans Angela Stanford, Stacy Lewis and Brittany Lang also advanced to the round of 16 with top-seeded Na Yeon Choi, world No. 1 Yani Tseng, No. 3 Suzann Pettersen and Ai Miyazato.
WGC: Seven months after joining forces to help Europe reclaim the Ryder Cup, Northern Irish duo Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell will meet in the final 16 at the World Match Play Championship in Casares, Spain.
McDowell won Group D with two straight victories, and McIlroy finished second in Group E following a 3-and-2 loss to Nicolas Colsaerts on Friday in round-robin play at Finca Cortesin.
In another match between European Ryder Cup teammates, top-ranked Lee Westwood will face fellow Englishman Ian Poulter. Westwood beat Aaron Baddeley 4 and 3 to top Group A. Poulter halved his Group H match with Paul Lawrie.
Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer, who could supplant Westwood as No. 1 if they win the tournament, also advanced as unbeaten group winners. No. 2 Donald beat Ross Fisher 3 and 1, and third-ranked Kaymer beat Noh Seung-yul 2 and 1.
