England will field three new caps in their six-strong squad to contest the European Boys Team Championships at Prague City Golf Club in the Czech Republic on 5th – 9th July.
The newcomers, all of whom are stepping up from under 16 level, are Curtis Griffiths (Wentworth, Surrey), Max Orrin (North Foreland, Kent) and Greg Payne (Chobham, Surrey). The other three members of the team will be Harry Casey (Enfield, Middlesex), Nathan Kimsey (Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire) and Toby Tree (Worthing, Sussex).
Griffiths, an under 16 cap in 2009, is currently leading the Titleist/Footjoy EGU Boys Order of Merit following second places in the Fairhaven Trophy in which he lost a playoff, and the South East Boys Qualifying. He was also fourth in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters having last year finished runner-up in the South East Junior Championship and joint sixth in the McEvoy Trophy.
Orrin, a former South of England Boys Champion, has been an under 16 International for the past two years and finished runner-up in the English Under 16 Championship for the McGregor Trophy last year. This year, he has finished second in the Darwin Salver, third in the Fairhaven Trophy and tied fifth in the South East of England Links Championship.
Payne (picture © Tom Ward), capped at under 16 level in 2009, is the current Surrey Boy Champion. A member of the winning Surrey side in the Boys County Finals in 2009 when he reached the third round of the British Boys, he also finished runner-up in this year’s McEvoy Trophy and lies fifth on the Titleist/Footjoy EGU Boys Order of Merit.
Casey made his debut as a boy cap in last year’s Boys Home Internationals, having finished joint runner-up in the English Under 18 Championship for the Carris Trophy. This year, the former Middlesex under 16 champion has finished tied fourth in the Hampshire Hog and the Fairhaven Trophy and joint third in the Lagonda Trophy.
Kimsey also earned his first boy cap in last year’s Boys Home Internationals having won the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters in the three-way playoff and finished runner-up in the Lincolnshire Championship. He won the McEvoy Trophy in April and recently finished tied fifth in the Sage Valley Junior International in the United States. He is currently fourth on the Titleist/Footjoy EGU Boys Order of Merit.
Tree won the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters last week and lies second on the Boys Order of Merit. A former Sussex Boys Champion, he is the reigning English under 16 champion and has been capped at under 16 level for the past two years. He also finished runner-up in last year’s North of England under 16 Championship.
The team will want to improve on eighth place in last year’s European Championships in Turkey and add to the eight victories already achieved, the last being in 2004 in Finland.
