Monty extends invite to play at Gleneagles to Tiger Woods

Either this is a thinly-veiled insult, or Colin Montgomerie is going to look like a PR genius.
European stalwart Colin Montgomerie says he is worried about the decline of Tiger Woods, especially after his narrow miss of the cut at the PGA Championship. With Woods’ game being viewed in a range of opinions from shambles to crumbling, Monty suggests Tiger get in some starts during the FedExCup playoffs in Europe.
With Woods ineligible to compete in the four-tournament series because he did not earn enough points in his eight PGA Tour starts in 2011, Woods could play in the European Tour as (at least for now) thanks to the invite from tournament chair Montgomerie.
“I’ve asked him as I have invitations available,” Montgomerie told the Daily Mirror. “We haven’t had a reply yet. Tiger looks like he’s going to have nowhere to play for nearly three months.”
Well, that’s not quite true. Woods cannot play in the FedExCup playoffs, basically encompassing September – all told, a six week layoff. The Fall Series is an option for Woods.
Monty continued, “It would be superb if he accepted. I know he has his children to think about, and all that sort of stuff that goes with family commitments, but wouldn’t it be great if he did say yes to any of our European Tour events? If you don’t ask, you don’t get, so it’s worth a go.”
It is a place to play for the next month, so it’s not that bad of an idea. Tim Rosaforte suggested Woods play in a Nationwide Tour event stateside to get reps, but the Euro Tour seems slightly less humbling.
Monty is very prone to make statements like these to keep his name in the headlines, but there is always the possibility that he knows something we don’t. If Woods is considering some playing time in the next six weeks and leading into the Aussie Open in November, Europe may be a more attractive choice.
