World No. 1 and front runner for PGA Tour Player of the Year Luke Donald is befuddled by the addition of the WGC HSBC Champions into the list of tournaments to be considered for the tour’s peer-voted honor.
“I think the decision to add HSBC is sketchy at best. Why change the rule the day after Disney? It doesn’t really make sense to me,” Donald said on “Morning Drive” on Tuesday.
Money from the $7 million event does not count toward the PGA Tour money list, but the win is officially recognized if a tour member takes the tournament. The tour decided to wait for the outcome of the event to profile candidates with the most accurate information.
Donald, however, feels the tour has now introduced a third end to the season.
“To be honest, everything needs to be simplified for the PGA Tour. There doesn’t seem to be a beginning and an end. You finish the FedEx Cup and you think the season’s over. Then you have the Fall Series and you think it’s over. Then they’re adding another event,” he said.
The world No. 1 has not committed to the Shanghai event as his wife Diane is close to giving birth to the couple’s second child. Even if he adds the tournament, Donald is not convinced that would be the true end to the tour year.
He said, “I feel like if I even went to HSBC and won, they’d find another event to add.”
