Luke Donald faces a battle to hold on to his world number one ranking after a poor opening round in South Carolina.
The Englishman needs a top eight finish at the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head to stay above Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy at the top of the standings.
Donald is eight shots behind first round leaders Chad Campbell, Vaughn Taylor and Colt Knost of the USA.
Starting at the 10th hole in wind-swept conditions he made three bogeys and one double-bogey in his four-over-par 75.
The 34-year-old spent 40 weeks at number one before being replaced by McIlroy in March, when the US Open champion won the Honda Classic by two strokes.
Donald regained top spot two weeks later with by winning a four-man play-off in the Transitions Championship in Florida.
