ATLANTA – On the eve of the Tour Championship and a week removed from his first Ryder Cup on U.S. soil, Rory McIlroy once again found himself answering questions about an event that is four years away.
Among the litany of questions the world No. 1 answered on Wednesday at East Lake, the uproar caused by his comments regarding the 2016 Olympics may have prompted the most emotional response.
“It hit home with me at how my success is welcomed by everyone. It would be terrible for me to segregate myself from one of those groups that supports me so much,” said McIlroy, who ignited the controversy when he hinted in a recent article that he would likely play for the United Kingdom, and not Ireland, during the ’16 Games. “It definitely makes me reconsider my position and reconsider a lot of things.”
McIlroy is first on the FedEx Cup points list and can wrap up the $10 million season-long race this week and with four Tour victories, including his second major triumph at the PGA Championship, he is the leading candidate for the PGA Tour Player of the Year award.
