John Daly has two major championship trophies on his mantle. He won the 1991 PGA Championship at Crooked Stick as the eighth alternate and the 1995 Open Championship at St. Andrews in a playoff over Constantino Rocca.
He has five PGA Tour wins, three European Tour wins, and has won over $10 million.
John has struggled for several years with addiction and personal problems. However, he has played much better this year.
Relying solely on sponsor exemptions, he has only missed two cuts in 11 events on the PGA Tour in 2012.
Two weeks ago, he finished T-5 at the Reno-Tahoe Open and posted a T-18 at the PGA Championship last week on Kiawah Island. Maybe he is peaking at just the right time.
Daly is currently ranked No. 137 on the FedEx Cup rankings. John would need to finish higher than No. 13 in the Wyndham Championship at Greensboro this week to get inside the top-125 and earn his playing privileges for 2013.
The top-125 would also qualify him for the FedEx Cup playoffs starting with the Barclays next week at Bethpage.
Two weeks ago, David Feherty hosted John on his show on Golf Channel. Daly seemed very much at peace with himself and his personal life. He seems to have come to terms with his addictions and appears to now have a better support system around him.
Daly is a golfer that everyman wants to root for. He has experienced success at the highest level and has had his personal demons played out on every television set in America. He says that he doesn't feel any additional pressure this week, but he knows what he needs to make the top-125.
Just maybe he is ready to accept the challenge and become the player that golf fans have been waiting to see.
After all, Americans love a good comeback story.
