Golfers Set to Contend
Tiger Woods
Who are you taking to win this weekend?
I know, I know, the four-time PGA Championship winner hasn't won a major tournament since 2008, big deal. Woods is still the No. 1 ranked golfer on the PGA money list in 2012 and has three PGA tournament wins to his name this season.
The fact that Tiger has played in and won the PGA Championship so many times certainly doesn't hurt his chances at tying Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen with five tournament crowns for his career. It is only a matter of time before Woods breaks through at a major. His third place finish at the British Open last month proves that he is knocking on the door.
Padraig Harrington
The Ireland native won the PGA Championship in 2008 and earned another Top 10 finish in 2009. Despite missing the cut in 2010 and finishing tied for 64th last year, Harrington's run in 2012 suggests that he will be among the final round contenders at Ocean Course on Sunday.
Harrington has come very close to winning a major this year, finishing tied for eighth and fourth respectively at the previous Masters and U.S. Open. If all indications are correct, then the three-time major winner will bounce back from a disappointing effort at the British Open in July with a strong outing at the PGA Championship.
Jason Dufner
Although the 35-year-old American has never won a major tournament, he has been heart-breakingly close in the last two years to walking away with the Wanamaker Trophy at the PGA Championship. After missing the cut in 2009, Dufner finished tied for fifth at the major in 2010 and came in second last year.
My money is on Dufner to remain scorching hot at the PGA Championship in 2012. The Ocean Course will be a difficult place for the No. 2 ranked golfer on the PGA money list to break through at, but his past performances at Highlands and Whistling Straights signal he is on to something big.
